The Circle Bakery's Sourdough Workshop

Have you tried to make a sourdough starter and failed? Interested in making sourdough bread for your family?

I will teach you a foolproof method with this hands-on sourdough workshop class so that you will know how to make sourdough and keep your starter alive for years.

Sourdough for Beginners Workshop Details

You'll learn how to bake sourdough in two hours and walk away with:

  • A sourdough starter
  • The knowledge to bake sourdough at home and a printed sourdough starter guide
  • A sourdough starter kit with helpful tools to get you started
  • Your own loaf that you'll start in the sourdough workshop and take home to bake the following day

Everyone who attends the bread baking class also has access to a post-workshop support group of other Indianapolis area bakers to help make your sourdough journey a success.

When: Saturday, May 17 from 2:30-4:30pm

Where: Brownsburg Public Library (450 S Jefferson Street) Sharpe Room

Participant Cost: $99.00

*Participants must be at least 13 years old. Any participants age 13-15 must have an adult participating in the workshop with them.

*I recommend that each participant have a Dutch Oven at home since you will have a loaf to bake that evening/next day. If you do not have a Dutch Oven or do not want one, you can use a roasting pan or other oven-safe covered dish. Also, you will need a kitchen scale for the next time you make dough!

Sourdough Workshop Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at thecirclebakery@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

I'm Julie, the owner of The Circle Bakery, a sourdough bread microbakery serving Brownsburg, Indianapolis, and Zionsville. I've made over 1,700 loaves of sourdough bread since launching my bakery in July 2023.

I'll be providing all of the tools needed for the class as well as some tools for you to take home. If you tend to be a little messy in the kitchen (I'm guilty!), you might want to bring an apron to wear during the class!.

Nothing! This is a class for beginners who are new to sourdough. You can know absolutely nothing, or have tried sourdough in the past, but not feel confident yet. Either way, you'll walk away with the knowledge, and hopefully the confidence, to make sourdough at home!

If you've been making sourdough for a little while and feel you've got the basics down, I would advise to wait on a future sourdough workshop that would cover more advanced techniques.

Yes! I require that participants be 13 or older and those under 16 must have an adult participating with them.

Yes! Check out my recommended tools section for what you might need at home to continue making sourdough after the workshop.

Yes; I'd love to help you host a girls night and learn sourdough! Please reach out to me (Julie) and let me know that you'd like to host a private sourdough workshop. Feel free to include some potential dates, how many people, where you'd like to host, and any other details or questions you might have. I'm happy to discuss with you!

Recommended Sourdough Tools

Mixing Tools

Making sourdough bread is an art and can be an expression of creativity for you. It doesn't take a lot of specialized tools; you likely have many tools in your kitchen already to utilize while making sourdough loaves and keeping up your sourdough starter.

Here are a few items I find helpful to have that are specialized for sourdough bread mixing:

  • Dough Whisk
  • Bread Banneton Basket - Single; Set of Two
  • Kitchen Scale
  • Larger Quantities Kitchen Scale
  • Bench Scraper
  • Dough Bin - this bin holds 2 loaves of sourdough comfortably, it's my favorite container for making small batches of sourdough because you can really see how much the dough rises due to the shape (straight sides) and measurements on the side.

Baking Tools

There are some necessary tools needed to help you execute the bread baking process of making a great loaf of sourdough. Here are some of my baking tool recommendations:

  • Lodge Cast Iron Dutch Oven
  • Amazon Cast Iron Dutch Oven
  • Roasting Pan
  • Instant Read Thermometer
  • Heat Resistant Oven Mitts - these heavy duty mitts have been my favorites while working with the hot oven temps for sourdough
  • Silicone Bread Sling - this helps save on parchment paper usage
  • Bread Scoring Lame

Sourdough Resources

I am a self-taught sourdough baker; I've consumed hours of online content and read through many sourdough books. You can start in your library; in fact, I requested the first book on this recommendation list at our public library and gained so much information from it that I bought it for myself after knowing it was a book I could consistently reference!

  • Artisan Sourdough Made Simple by Emilie Raffa
  • New World Sourdough by Bryan Ford
  • The Perfect Loaf by Maurizio Leo
  • Bread Baking for Beginners by Bonnie Ohara - this one isn't all sourdough based, but was instrumental in me learning about temperatures and the foundations of bread making

Cleaning Tools

There are some helpful tools needed to help with cleaning or maintaining a clog-free drain with sourdough cleanup:

  • Monthly Drain Cleaner - this has helped me unclog my drain multiple times! Recommended by my local plumber as well.r - these go over your drain to help catch all of the bits of sourdough while you're cleaning your bins.
  • Sink Strainer - this helps catch all of the sourdough bits and gunk so it doesn't go down your drain.
  • Bench Scraper - you received one in our workshop, but in case you want multiples or to give one to a break making friend. These are wonderful tools to help scrape your bins out.
